Starting on September 1, 2024, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will introduce significant changes to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) rules, aimed at easing the financial burden on beneficiaries. One of the key updates is the removal of food from being considered In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM). Previously, free food could reduce an SSI beneficiary’s monthly check by the Presumed Maximum Value (PMV) amount of $334.33 in 2024. This means food support will no longer reduce SSI benefits, simplifying reporting and potentially increasing benefits. Additionally, the rental subsidy policy, previously limited to a few states, will be extended nationwide, increasing financial relief for more people. The definition of "public assistance household" will also be broadened, allowing more individuals to qualify for SSI benefits. These changes are expected to streamline access to essential support and provide increased benefits to eligible recipients, especially those who rely on food assistance or housing subsidies.
As stated on advocacysnt.org, “These updates, aimed at expanding access and simplifying processes, are crucial for current and potential SSI recipients and legal professionals involved in special needs planning. Understanding these changes can help beneficiaries maximize their benefits and navigate the system more effectively. This article provides a detailed overview of the upcoming changes and their impacts.”
